Seasonal Affective Disorder
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
During the winter months, when the days are shorter and sunlight seems a bit scarce, a portion of people struggle with crucial mood changes. This malady is referred to as Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD. This condition is a type of depression which usually comes and goes with the passing of the winter season.
The symptoms of SAD can vary for each individual and can include:
- Being overcome with pessimism, hopelessness, or an empty feeling
- Affected by a sense of worthlessness, helplessness, or guilt
- Distressed with an a sense of restlessness, anxiety, or irritability
- Losing pleasure or interest in your favorite activities
- The loss of energy or being overcome by fatigue
- Problems sleeping; getting either too much or not enough sleep
- Thoughts of death or suicide
Light therapy is an effective way to treat this condition, but more than half of the people affected by this illness need more than just that. Talk therapy and in some cases anti-depressants are prescribed by their doctors. These additional treatments can help to lower the symptoms that come with SAD.
