What Is ADD

What Is Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)?

Like ADHD, ADD is a mental disorder of the neurodevelopmental type.  It is characterized by problems paying attention, excessive activity, or difficulty controlling behavior which is not appropriate for a person’s age. The symptoms appear before a person is twelve years old, are present for more than six months, and cause problems at school, home or in recreational activities.

In children, problems paying attention may result in poor school performance.  Although it causes impairment, particularly in modern society, many children with ADD have a good attention span for tasks they find interesting. You can learn more about Causes Of ADD In Kids here.

1. ADHD, Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation

Kids who have this type of ADHD have symptoms of hyperactivity and feel the need to move constantly. They also struggle with impulse control. Typically they don’t have much trouble with inattention.

It’s often easier to spot signs of this type of ADHD. Kids who have it may struggle to sit still in class and manage their behavior.

2. ADHD, Predominantly Inattentive Presentation

Kids who have this type of ADHD have difficulty paying attention. They’re easily distracted but don’t have much trouble with impulsivity or hyperactivity. This is sometimes unofficially referred to as attention-deficit disorder (or ADD).

Kids with this type of ADHD may “fly under the radar” because they may not be disruptive in class. In fact, they may appear shy or “daydreamy.”

3. ADHD, Combined Presentation

This is the most common type of ADHD. Kids who have it show significant problems with both hyperactivity/impulsivity and inattention.

How To Know If A Child Has ADD?

Inattention, hyperactivity, disruptive behavior, and impulsivity are common in kids with ADD.  Academic difficulties are frequent as are problems with relationships.  The symptoms can be difficult to define as it is hard to draw a line at where normal levels of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity end and significant levels requiring interventions begin.
