The flu affects the nose, throat and lungs and if left untreated, in rare cases can contribute to a flu related death.  The exact number of deaths in America are unknown but it is estimated that in the fall and winter of 2017, out of about 900,000 people hospitalized, there were about 80,000 flu related deaths.
