What Does an Allergic Reaction Look Like on a Child?

Different allergies have different reactions in children. Some of these reactions can be very serious. In many children, the common allergy symptom is the allergy rhinitis. It causes a runny, stuffy and itchy nose. Children are at risk of two dangerous allergic reactions; anaphylaxis and asthma.

Food Allergies & Anaphylaxis

Food allergies in children are usually because of dairy products, peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, shellfish and some vegetables. The symptoms for food allergies are hives and anaphylaxis.

Symptoms of anaphylaxis:

  • Noisy or difficult breathing
  • Swelling of the tongue
  • Swallowing difficulties
  • Vomiting, cramps, diarrhea
  • Inflamed and itchy skin
  • Paleness, disorientation

Environmental Allergies

These allergies are caused by dust, mold and pets and they can trigger asthma attacks.

Symptoms of asthma:

  • Wheezing
  • Chest tightness
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath

Skin Allergies

These are caused by dust mites, dyes, food, fragrances, latex, mold, pets and pollen

Skin allergy symptoms:

  • Eczema characterized by red and itchy rashes
  • Dermatitis where skin looks scaly and appears leathery
  • Hives, red bumps or welts which develop immediately the child comes into contact with an allergen

When you suspect that your child has an allergic reaction, talk to a doctor as soon as possible. Children can easily get allergic reactions that can become life threatening. Avoid any situations you feel may cause and allergic reaction.
