The first sneeze of the fall season, and everyone has a home remedy for you. So you sniffle and nod, and promise you’ll drink that cup of tea when you get home, but you usually take the over the counter capsule and try to fall asleep hoping to wake up with bright eyes, and a clear head, never quite getting the relief that you need.

Some of those home remedies actually work.

One of the old wives tales that tends to circulate during this season is that of an onion. Cut an onion, leave it in a bowl in your room, and it will cure you. This sounds far fetched, but here is some interesting information about onions.

The antioxidant flavonoid Quercetin is found in both shallots and red or yellow onions alike.  It is present on the skin of the onion as well as near the skin of the onion and it is directly connected to the healing properties of onions.

Using onions frequently in your diet can in fact help to combat diseases that are considered degenerative, as well as to aid in the healing process of the common cold or hay-fever.

It is not only useful as an expectorant, but it also fights the growth of several types of bacteria including E. coli and Salmonella.

Remember that after cooking, the healing properties tend to be depleted from this plant. So if you want to get all the healing benefits that you can from an onion you should eat it raw.
