Pool Safety

As the end of the school year draws to a close this means one thing…SUMMER! During the summer families, especially children spend an increased amount of time out doors. For most families who want to beat the heat going to the pool is a great activity.

Staying Safe at the Pool

  1.  Remember the sunscreen. Little ones, especially infants are more susceptible to sunburns. In fact babies under 6 months of age should be dressed in light-weight long sleeve shirts and pants, and a wide brimmed hat. Older children who are enjoying some fun in the sun should be sure to apply a thin coating of sunscreen that is at least 15 SPF, and reapply as per the bottle instructions.
  2.  Stay Hydrated. Although while playing in a pool an individual is surrounded by water, it is still likely that they are losing water due to sweating from sun exposure. Drinking plenty of fluids, especially water, can reduce the chances of complications brought on by dehydration.
  3.  Never leave children unattended near water. Having an individual designated to supervise the kids is a great plan when having a family outing, or just a fun day at the pool. Children who cannot swim yet should always be accompanied by an adult who knows how to swim, one who knows CPR is a plus.
  4.  If you have a home pool it is important to install safety gear. Investing in pool gates, fencing, pool alarms, and rescue equipment can save a child’s life.
  5.  Keep your little ones away from the drains. The suction caused by the drains can be strong enough to trap a child underwater, and cause them to drown. You should know if your pool is operating at the standards of the Pool and Spa Safety Act.
  6.  Teach your child water safety. Learning basic pool rules can reduce the chance of accident. Typically your community pool would offer a safety class for children of all ages, instructing them on how to swim, and general rules such as no running near a pool and no swimming without an adult present.
  7.  Always have your phone handy. In case of emergency be prepared to call 911.

Hopefully with these tips you will be able to have a happier, healthier summer vacation.
